When I first published this list I had a whole different set of quotes. Tonight I started trying to find out where & when they were originally said, which turned out to be more difficult than I imagined, at which point far better quotes were found. So here is a whole new list. These new (yet old) quotes are with which I can associate, sympathize and better empathize.

“You know, I used to think, you know, when I was a kid, “I’ll never change, never change. We’re going to be in the band, we’ll never change.” What a stupid idea.
You should change and, as much as you fight off being rock stars, it’s like just, you know, run with it, and I’m kind of amazed we’re getting away with it.
I don’t think we were sort of designed to be rock stars. If you look at us as people, we’re not really – I don’t really – you know, we’re just we’re not that kind of people, and yet we are, I suppose, rock stars, which I find bizarre.”

Quoted Enough Rope Transcripts, 6 November 2006.  This transcript has heaps of great quotes in it, but this says so much about the band itself. To read more about Bono’s political connections (remembering it was 2006), moments from that ‘Lemon Incident’ and much more, read the whole transcript. Andrew Denton is and always will be a great communicator, but Bono tells great stories!

It’s an amazing thing to think that ours is the first generation in history that really can end extreme poverty, the kind that means a child dies for lack of food in its belly.
That should be seen as the most incredible, historic opportunity – but instead it’s become a millstone around our necks. We let our own pathetic excuses about how it’s “difficult” justify our own inaction.
Be honest. We have the science, the technology, and the wealth. What we don’t have is the will, and that’s not a reason that history will accept.

Quoted from  World Association of Newspapers for World Press Freedom Day, 3 May 2004.
Read the whole transcript. It’s chilling, amazing, and still relevant in 2017.

You know I used to think the future was solid or fixed, something you inherited like an old building that you move into when the previous generation moves out or gets chased out. But it’s not. The future is not fixed, it’s fluid. The world is more malleable than you think and it’s waiting for you to hammer it into shape.

Quoted from the University of Pennsylvania Almanac, Vol. 50, No. 34, 25 May 2004.
Actual date of quote: 17 May 2004

The research for quotes by Bono are extensive as it often requires copious amounts of reading, yet I am enjoying every moment of it. That said, it takes hours to determine where and when stuff was really said. This is because many seem to have been taken out of context, or are mashups of multiple quotes. So I am enjoying reading transcripts from conversations (as shown above), and finding amazing short stories and anecdotes that I firmly believe deserve better archiving.

I may put more of my findings on this page, or else I will produce new posts and link back to this page. We’ll see. Thanks for reading this far. Yeah, Larry, Adam and The Edge will be (correctly) quoted over the next few months!
